Ukulele Video Lesson - Stand By Me (Ben E. King)

This ukulele video lesson may be taking you back to your rearing years in the 60’s, or when this song got re-introduced to a new generation growing up in the 80’s, as it did for me. Stand By Me is a easy four chord song, with a easy chord progression. The strumming may be a little tricky. But with practice, you should be able to get it down in know time!

So darlin', darlin'...

“Stand By Me” was co-written by Ben E. King and two other's. It is Ben’s voice that you hear through out the song. If his voice sounds familiar, it should, because he was one of the front men from the famous groups of the 60’s, The Drifters. Besides “Stand By Me”, his voice can also be heard on other famous songs like, “Save The Last Dance For Me”, “There Goes My Baby”, and “This Magic Moment”.

King’s original intention, was to record “Stand By Me” with The Drifter’s. But it was passed up by the group. Big mistake! While King and The Drifters were done with “Spanish Harlem’s” recording session, the record producers asked if there were any more songs that King wanted to record. He started to play “Stand By Me” for them, and you know how the saying goes, “The rest is history!”

In 1986, “Stand By Me” was made into a movie. This was when my generation was introduced to this song. Geeze, that was 30 years ago! It was directed by Rob Reiner, and starred some up and coming teen actors of that time. To sum it up, the movie plot is about a group of boys that goes on a hiking trip, and finds a dead body. It takes place in Oregon, on Labor Day, in 1959. The movie was based on Stephen King’s, “The Body”.

Here’s the lyrics:

When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we'll see

No I won't be afraid
Oh, I won't be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

So darling, darling
Stand by me, oh stand by me
Oh stand, stand by me
Stand by me

If the sky that we look upon
Should tumble and fall
Or the mountain should crumble to the sea

I won't cry, I won't cry
No, I won't shed a tear
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

And darling, darling
Stand by me, oh stand by me
Oh stand now, stand by me
Stand by me

So darling, darling
Stand by me, oh stand by me
Oh stand now, stand by me, stand by me
Whenever you're in trouble won't you stand by me
Oh stand by me, won't you stand now, oh, stand
Stand by me
