Ukulele Video Lesson - Colour My World (Chicago)

With this ukulele video lesson, you can learn to play “Colour My World” by Chicago before you know it! This song begins with a relatively simple piano run, and you can actually translate these notes to ukulele relatively easily. The piano has a classical feel to it, and the song actually sounds fantastic when you bring it over to the ukulele.

One of the hallmarks of Chicago is the fact that they utilized so many different instruments in their songs. At first, this might seem daunting to someone who wants to play it on ukulele, but it shouldn’t. With the ukulele, you will take the most important elements of the song and will be playing those. Once you watch this lesson, you will see just how easy it can be to make this song sound fantastic on your instrument.

A song Terry Kath sang until his passing...

“Colour My World” was written by James Pankow, the band’s trombone player. Terry Kath sang the song, and it was popular live up until Kath passed away in 1978. After that, the band didn’t play the song live for a number of years. In fact, it wasn’t until Bill Champlin started singing it. Later, Robert Lamm sang it live, and it has remained one of their most popular live songs.

The song is unapologetically a love song. Pankow said that he “used the emotion of love and description as a technicolor movie that takes place in my heart.” He also says that he was influenced by Bach, particularly the Brandenburg Concertos and the arpeggios they contained. That is why the song has a classical feeling to it.

Even though “Colour My World” is one of the best known and most beloved of Chicago’s songs, it never reached the charts because it was never released as a single. It was, however, on the B-side of two different songs. It was the B-side for “Make Me Smile” in 1970, and then for “Beginnings” in 1971.
